A short drive south from
Brisbane- Gold Coast is simply referred to by Aussies as
'Surfers'. To the rest of the world this is a surfers'
paradise. Stretching to the New South Wales border is a
seashore of golden sand and rolling surf - the only natural
element that remains after the Gold Coast makeover.
As early as 1936 the 'Surfers
Paradise Hotel' was opened as a hideaway, in addition to a large and
varied selection of guesthouses for those seeking a romantic and
peaceful escape. However today most of the guesthouses have
gone and the hotel site has been engulfed by the 'Paradise Centre' -
a massive shopping centre and restaurant complex. This is
Australia's major holiday destination with over 3 million visitors a
year. They have all the Theme parks imaginable and even a
Dreamworld for those who want to leave reality behind. A ribbon of
apartment blocks, golf courses and motels is backed by 'canal
estates' - a jetty with every home!
Whilst the old world charm of this
place has been replaced and much of the tropical vegetation
destroyed, Gold Coast is the continent's most active area of
property speculation.
We will bring you more of this now famous
